Obituary

William A. Reed Sr., 96, formerly of New Kensington died Sunday, February 20, 2022 at home in Landsdale, PA.  He was born in New Kensington August 16, 1925.

Bill proudly enlisted in the Army right out of high school before turning eighteen. He studied at Virginia Military Institute and Heidelberg College before shipping out to Europe with the 102nd Infantry Division. On November 18, 1944, he was severely injured and left for dead on the battlefield in Germany. After being discharged from the Army, he met and married Charlotte Pearl Bowser on June 1, 1946. They remained married until her death in 1993. He later married Marie Theis Schott. They were married almost eight years until her death in 2003.

Bill had worked as a postal clerk before enlisting. After the war, he held various jobs until returning to the post office in 1966. He served as a mail carrier until his retirement in 1989. Bill was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Natrona Heights, serving as a deacon for many years. He enjoyed travelling and was fortunate to see much of the world, including a return trip to Germany with surviving members of the 102nd Division. He also enjoyed going to auto races, playing scrabble, solving crossword puzzles, swimming, and wintering in Florida after his retirement. His greatest joys were his family, riding in the sidecar of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle that he bought when he was ninety, and a great big heaping bowl of ice cream each evening.

Bill is survived by four of his children, Kathleen (Keith) Alter, Fred (Patti) Reed, Rebecca (Ken) Montanari, and Rachel (Michael) English. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Cathy Domitrovic; and niece, Judy (Charles) West.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amelia Ramsey (Albert) Yobp and Ralph Reed; his son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Karolyn; granddaughter, Karla O’Maille; great-grandson, Adam O’Maille; sister and brother-in-law, LaRue (Ray) Miller; and nephew, Jim Miller; and stepdaughters, Candy Greco and Caren Cinpinski.
