Wendell Brian Coury, 73, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully at home on December 8, 2024, after having fought a brave and courageous two year battle with cancer.
Born February 13, 1951, in New Kensington, he resided in New Kensington and Lower Burrell most of his life except for some years spent living and working in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mr. Coury was a 1969 graduate of Valley High School and proudly served for four years in the US Navy as a boatswain in the Pacific.
In the footsteps of his late father, Lt. James Coury, Wendell served eight years as a City of New Kensington Police Officer before working and retiring from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Research Laboratory, Natrona Heights. After retirement he moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he was lieutenant of security for a private golf community. Later he very much enjoyed the time spent as an Intercoastal Waterways swing bridge operator. Wendell returned to his hometown of New Kensington in the spring of 2023.
Wendell will always be remembered by those who loved him as a loving, caring, kindhearted person with a strong belief in his faith and a deep reverence for his church, The River 15068, in Lower Burrell. He much enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, attending his kids and grandkids sporting events. He enjoyed playing the daily number and had previously played in two bowling leagues, and had appeared on the Nick Perry Bowling for Dollars TV show.
Wendell is survived by Jamie Ross Kiger of New Kensington, who he had known from high school. She held a very special place in his heart and he happily spent the last few years of his life with her. He is also survived by his three sons, Derick Coury (Jill) of Lower Burrell, Jarrod Coury (Kari) of Shiremanstown, and Jason Coury of Pittsburgh, along with six grandchildren, Trey Peyton, Kendall, Chase, Charley and Bailey; his brother Thomas Coury (Anne) of Hummelstown; and his former spouse, Laurie Coury of Cabot.
He was preceded in death by his parents James A. & Florence Espier Caventer Coury; as well as his brother, James G. Coury.
Visitation will be from 2-4 PM on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at the River 15068, 273 Chester Drive, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, where services will be held on Monday, December 16, at 11 AM, officiated by Reverend Dean Ward, and where Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors. ROSS G. WALKER was entrusted with all arrangements.
