The Reverend LaVerne Godson Embry, 73, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 23, 2022.
LaVerne was born September 11, 1949, in New Kensington to the late Arthur B. and Hattie Louise Gregory Godson II. She was also preceded by her husband Lonnie Embry in 2003.
She served as Assistant Pastor of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of New Kensington for the past five years, and previous to that was Associate Pastor of Canaan First Baptist Church of New Kensington for over 10 years. Prior to her being a minister, she was a candy striper at Citizens General Hospital in New Kensington, then a licensed practical nurse at Harmarville Rehabilitation Center.
She was a natural born caregiver and spent her life helping other people. She enjoyed collecting baby Yodas.
Surviving are her son, Lamar Gregory (Abby Shook) Godson of Butler; four grandchildren, Izayah, Jaziah, Yahshua and Jericho; siblings, paternal twin, Lorraine Godson, with whom she lived, Arthur B. (Myrtle Louise Gray) Godson III of New Kensington, Merle (Tina Wright) Godson and Ned (Caroline Poole) Godson, both of Memphis, TN. Also 15 other children, including Barbara A. Cohen and Patrice Long; 41 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington. A service will be held Friday, December 30, at 11am in Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1150 Asa W. Roberts Blvd., New Kensington with viewing one hour prior to service. Rev. Darryl Johnson, pastor of the church will preside. Private burial will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights.
