Phyllis Johnson Obituary

Phyllis Jean Johnson, 86, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

She was born June 10, 1937 to the late James and Onieda Williams, and was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in New Kensington for 60 plus years, where she served as head of the kitchen. Her work ethic has been extensively documented throughout her life, working in the cafeteria at Shadyside Academy, was a Crossing Guard for the New Kensington/Arnold School District and a laborer at Allegheny Ludlum.  People enjoyed stopping by the Deli at Foodland to see Miss Phyllis. Her services were essential at Seed, supplying essential meals for the weekend to the neighborhood kids.

She was a member of the Moose Club of Lower Burrell, was a member of City Council for Parks and Recreation in Arnold, was a Democratic Committee Woman working on the Voting Polls every year until she was unable to serve.

An accomplished dancer, she performed for a number of different organizations and was well-known for her passionate line dancing style with Carol's Cruisers and the Butler 2-Steps.  Phyllis was also known for her snazzy outfits and her matching bling-bling shoes. After vowing to herself that she would complete her high school education after getting married, she graduated from Valley High School. Her mother, husband, and six children proudly attended her graduation.

Besides her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Ralph W. Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her only sister, Marva Williams Patrick of Haverford.  Six children, Sabrina Johnson of New Kensington, Kim Pryor (David) of Monroeville, Ralph J. Johnson (Yvette) of Apollo, Terri Butcher of Montgomery, AL, Renee Cox (Anthony) of Lexington, KY, and Darryl Johnson (Valerie) of Lower Burrell. Her lineage also consists of 22 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
