Phoebe Black Obituary

Phoebe Garner Black, 78, of New Kensington, passed away on June 22, 2021. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 4, 1943, to Essie and Paris Garner, and later came to live in Creighton at the age of 5 when her mother passed.

She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Alphronia and Ezekiel McIntyre. In her youth, Phoebe was a member at Vermont Baptist Church, where she sang in the junior and senior choir. She also sang with the W.T. Hill Singers, the Valley Colliers, and most recently in her current church’s choir at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of New Kensington. Phoebe was the president of the young people’s usher board and taught small children in Sunday school.

She retired from the postal service in New York where she lived for 35 years. She also worked as a home health aide and personal care aide. Her favorite activities were crossword puzzles and reading.

Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband of 17 years, Andrew Black; one day old son Andrew Jr.; birth mother, Essie Garner; aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. McIntyre; and sisters, Ethina Gibson and Delores Henderson.

She is survived by her son, Louis Black; grandchildren, Sasha and Brittany; great-grandchildren Jimai, Micah, and Le’Veon; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and cousins.

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 26, 2021 from 11:00 AM until time of funeral service at 12:00 PM in Ross G. Walker Funeral Home, Ltd., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington. Rev. Darryl Johnson will officiate. www.rossgwalker.com
