Minerva “Minnie” Matthews, 91, formerly of New Kensington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
She was born in New Kensington on December 27, 1934 to the late The Very Reverend Father Nicholas Ofiesh and Khouyria Emily Ofiesh.
An Orthodox Christian, she was a member of the church founded by her father, St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in New Kensington
A Registered Nurse, Ms. Matthews worked in the operating room at the former St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh. She enjoyed playing bingo, but more importantly loved her family.
Surviving are her daughter, Nina J. Jorinscay, son, Sam (Yulia) Matthews Jr. ; grandchildren, Kathleen (Thomas), John (Shenley), Rebecca, Elizabeth, Sarah, Shaun and Marina; great-grandchildren, John, Hannah, Robert, Brayden, Kiera, Gabe, Colton, Elijah, Eleanor, Jackson and Samantha; and her sister, Madeline Kayafas.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Matthews; siblings, The Very Reverend Father Gregory Ofiesh, Gladys Beter, Dr. Gabriel Ofiesh, George Ofiesh, Albert Ofiesh, Nadia Ward, Dr. Catherine Orner, Virginia Ofiesh, Elayne Ofiesh, Neal Ofiesh and Edward Ofiesh.
The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the Orthopaedic Treatment Ward of Mercy Hospital, and Highland Hills Nursing Home for their wonderful, compassionate and professional care over the past eight years.
