Lawrence "Larry" Sassani Obituary

Lawrence P. Sassani, “Larry”, 60, passed away Friday December 10, 2021 at the Belair Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after his 20 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born January 6, 1961, in Shamokin, PA, he was the first child of Lawrence and Carol Mae (Lukens) Sassani who have preceded him in death.

His father relocated them to Buffalo, NY and then to Olean where Larry attended Olean Public Schools from 3rd through 12th grade graduating in 1979.   A child of the 70’s and always the dare devil, he was “that boy” who could ramp jump over garbage cans on his banana bike, hang between the broken boards of the Thatcher Site bridge, chance a trestle crossing to beat an oncoming train to take a short cut, sneak back stage during the Miss New York State pageant rehearsals, and many other “Don’t Tell Mom!” activities.  He was a member of the track team (high jump) and on the wrestling squad.

After high school he lead a gypsy kind of life living and working in Florida, Texas, California where he learned to hang glide, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  After returning to the mainland, he attended Mansfield University in Pennsylvania for a semester.  In the fall of 1983 he travelled to London and worked in a restaurant.

It was in London that he met his wife, Martina, a native of Germany.  Returning to the states they married in 1985 and eventually settled in York, PA.  They were married for 34 years before her death in 2019. They had one son, Hunter Sassani, who still resides in York.

Larry packed a lot of life into his years.  He worked as a construction laborer and enjoyed hobbies such as hang gliding, hunting, fishing, wildlife tracking, and camping.  He took some classes in videography and acting, and performed in a production with the Fulton Community Theater of Lancaster, PA.

Larry is survived by siblings Virginia Sassani of Pittsburgh, PA, Maria (Richard Kunkle) Sassani of Pittsburgh, PA, Carla (Leonard) Delvecchio of Boalsburg, PA, Luke (Rachel) Sassani of Lower Burrell, PA, Samuel (Jennifer) Sassani of Zionsville, PA and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles who will miss him.
