John W. Whitman Sr., 94, of Tarentum, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2023.
He was born September 26, 1928, in Tarentum to the late Velma Whitman Clemons and Cicero Gilbert. He was raised in the Bull Creek Area of Jobe’s Hole and remained a boy scout at heart. John served in the Navy on the SS Little Rock and SS Wilkes Barre. He was a postal carrier for the United States Post Office in Creighton.
A devoted church member, John gave his life to the Lord at an early age. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, bowling, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his children, John “Chip” (Maty Diene) Whitman, Jr., of Tarentum, Cheryl “Margie” (Rev. William) Garnett of Creighton, Cynthia (Norman) Newman of Pittsburgh, and Joni (Howard) Roberts of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren, Todd, Tremayne, Norman, Jr., Anthony (Tomica), Hali Jo (Everett), Nicole (Jeff), Hasson, Haliya, Hosea (Taylor), Hana (Andre) and Camarius; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and sister Mary Clemons.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen Whitman, his parents, sister Ethel Whitman Johnson, and grandparents, Elner and Idora Whitman, who raised him.
Viewing will be on Friday, June 23 from 5 to 8 PM in the ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24 at 10AM in Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1150 Asa W. Roberts Way (formerly Fourth Avenue), New Kensington. Attendees are requested to go straight to the church. Burial with military services accorded by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Mount Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights.
