James V. “Jimi” Smolenak, 57, died peacefully in his home on July 25, 2026. James was born on January 7, 1969, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan and grew up in the Kinloch area of Lower Burrell. He graduated from Burrell High School in 1986 and immediately joined the United States Air Force at age 17, serving as a Medical Service Specialist during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. He attained the rank of Senior Airman and was awarded an Air Force Outstanding Unit and National Defense Service Medal. James was proud of his service to his country and continued being of service to others as the Plant Protection Senior Firefighter/EMT for the last 13 years at Allegheny Ludlum/ATI Brackenridge. He also served as the EMS coordinator at the Upper Burrell Township Volunteer Fire Department for six years. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. Surviving are his son, Charles Smolenak (Rachel), and his daughter, Sydney Smolenak. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Smolenak, mother, Janice Peace, and his faithful dog, Bonnie.  
Viewing will be on Friday, July 31, 2026 from 2PM until time of service at 6 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington.  Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors at 2PM at the funeral home.
