James L. Shields of Lower Burrell passed away Tuesday July 23 at Quality Life Sugar Creek skilled nursing facility. Born in New Kensington on September 19, 1938 to Raymond V. Shields Sr. and Maxine G. Shields he was 85 years old. He attended Arnold High School. A long time resident of Lower Burrell where he was a Boy Scout leader for over 40 years and was loved by all that knew him. Known for his unselfish dedication to his family, friends, and the Boy Scouts, he was awarded the Silver Beaver award in 1989 for his service to Scouting. Being a positive roll model for countless boys was the only reward he needed. Jim was a member of Local 1058 where he worked for 37 years building the bridges, roads and highways around the Pittsburgh area. He was a dedicated husband for 64 years to his beloved wife Alice, a proud parent of four, grandparent of five and great grandparent of one. An avid snowmobile rider, outdoorsman, fisherman, and hunter, he was always in his element when he was in the outdoors. His most enjoyable moments were being at camp sitting around a campfire with friends and family and cooking for others on the open fire. He also enjoyed listening to his wife singing hymns.
He will be loved and forever missed by his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Shields Jr., and his two brothers, Raymond Shields and Donald Shields. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice (Fogle) Shields; his daughter Deborah (Michael) Rumbaugh of Apollo; his son, Richard (Karen) Shields of Slippery Rock; and his daughter, Traci (Eric) Reed of Grayson, Georgia; his two grandsons Daniel Adams and Parker Reed; his three granddaughters Caitlin George, Madison Reed and Ashley Shields; his sister, Darlene Blickenderfer of Plum Borough; and a great-granddaughter, Natalie George.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Upper Burrell and Hillcrest Alliance Church in Lower Burrell.
The family would like to thank the staff at Quality Life Services ‘Sugarcreek’ for their excellent and compassionate care during his stay.
In leu of a viewing, a memorial service for family and friends to celebrate James’ life is planned at First Baptist Church 3740 Seventh Street Road Upper Burrell, PA on Saturday, August 31 at 2 pm.
