Helen Marie Lawton Obituary

Helen Marie (Leger) Lawton, age 91, of New Kensington, formerly of Plum Borough passed away on January 16, 2021 at Concordia Personal Care in Cabot, PA. She was born March 29, 1929 (Good Friday) in Pittsburgh Hospital. She was the first of five children to Marie (Zechender) Leger and Charles Leger, Jr.

She is survived by sisters, Catherine (Leger) McGee and Joanne (William) Eastley; and brother, Clarence “Sonny” (Judy) Leger; and pre-deceased by brother, Charles E. Leger.

She was the wife of Kenneth Blair Lawton for 45 years until his death in 1992. She met him at school when they were both 15 years old. Coincidentally, they were both living in the same rooming house in East Liberty at the time of their births, but later met at Westinghouse High School.

Kenneth and Helen married on December 12, 1947 and had three daughters, Susan (Mark) Tuite, Patty (Butch, deceased) Stone, and Sandra (Keith Belles) Lawton. There are six grandchildren, Michelle Cooper, Brenda (David) Roger, Shane (Gina) Stone, Valerie (Michael) Rivett, Patrick Lawton, and Miranda (Allison Eddy) Belles; Eleven great-grandchildren, Daniel Cooper, Alex Cooper, Samantha Cooper, Evan Cooper, Dominick Stone, Michael Rivett, Jr., Macie Rivett, Tyler Lawton, Emilia Lawton, Isaac Eddy-Belles, and Eleanor Eddy-Belles; and great-granddaughter, Marlee Cooper.

Besides being a great wife, mother, and grandmother, Helen was an excellent artist and craftsperson. She was always artistic and loved drawing as a teenager, sewing as a mother, and later in life began decorative painting. She taught that skill to students in her home and at Westmoreland and Allegheny County Community Colleges. Helen also enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, and wildlife in general.

Helen had always lived in the Pittsburgh vicinity. Most of her adult life was spent in Plum Borough and in the New Kensington area.

She was preceded in death by her companion of the last 25+ years, Harold Korber.
