Dorothy Marie Haley Lyle, 98, of New Kensington, PA, passed peacefully on May 24, 2024, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on August 18, 1925, in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, Dorothy was the eldest daughter of Robert Ellis “Bus” Bowman and Clara Hayes. Her four sisters, Helen Blake, Lenora Brownlee, Vivian “Beanie” Connor, and Mary Francis Moore, all preceded her in death.
Dorothy's life was a testament to her deep love for family, friends, and her unwavering faith in The Lord. In 1942, she met John Lester Lyle, the love of her life, and they married on January 4, 1943. Together, they built a beautiful family with eight children: Andrew (Pamela), Towanda Marshall, John Tyrone, Torrence (Mary), Teralyn Stipetich (John), Anthony (Patrice), Tonyia Young (Harvey), and Trinnia Greenlee (William). Dorothy was blessed with 98 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.
Dorothy's nurturing spirit and wisdom made her the heart of the family. Her impeccable memory for special dates, her comforting hugs, and her culinary skills were legendary. She was a steadfast friend and an encourager, always supporting her loved ones in their dreams.
In 1957, Dorothy became a dedicated member of Vermont Baptist Church in Creighton, Pennsylvania. She was actively involved in the choir, Youth Fellowship, the Never Idle Club, and the Senior Missionary. Her faith led her to significant roles in the A.U.B.A. and Lott Carey, where she inspired many young people. As President of the Pearl Peoples Missionary Society and an ordained Deaconess, her contributions were immeasurable.
Dorothy valued education, earning her G.E.D. from Tarentum High School. She worked at Gulf Oil, with the lunch program and tape libraries. She cherished her 1920s bungalow on Woodmont Avenue, where she welcomed her extensive family and nurtured her garden. A collector of cherished ephemera, Dorothy appreciated the history and stories behind each piece.
