Dale A. Johnson, 91, of Lower Burrell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
He was born April 4, 1932 in New Kensington to the late Clyde and Lenore Woolslayer Johnson.
Dale was a 1950 graduate of Ken-Hi, then graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science Degrees in Music Education. He taught elementary education and instrumental music in the Highlands School district for 35 years, and gave private lessons in piano and organ for 70 years. He served as a church organist from age 11, until a few months ago, serving for 80 years, at many churches throughout the Alle-Kiski Valley, including the Trinity United Methodist of Brackenridge, and Arnold United Methodist Church, Bethesda Lutheran Church in Lower Burrell, the former First Presbyterian Church of New Kensington, Janes United Methodist Church in Creighton and the Springdale United Methodist Church. He was also the organist for Ross G. Walker Funeral Home in New Kensington, the past 22 years.
Fishing, camping, traveling in campers and motorhomes, and of course music, were some of his passions.
Dale was a member of Bethel Lodge 789 Free & Accepted Masons of Lower Burrell, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Pittsburgh, and the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Cheswick, where he served as president of the Chanters. He was a member of the Springdale United Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club of Tarentum
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Arlene L. Turney Johnson; daughters, Carrie L. (Jimmy) Stello and Cami L. (George) Sandrey; grandchildren, Eric (Katie), Bryan (Justina), Tara, Allison (David), Stephanie (Colton) and Samantha (Jordon); great-grandchildren, Hailey, Landon, Nash, Lennox, Axel, and one boy “on the way;” as well as his brother, Floyd Johnson.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol McElroy.
Viewing will be on Tuesday, October 10, from 5-8 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where masonic services will be conducted Tuesday at 7 PM by Bethel Lodge. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 11 at 10 AM in the funeral home, with his pastor, Rev. Zack Bohinski, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
