Chester Harris Jr. Obituary

 

Chester E. “Chipper” Harris, Jr., 55, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2018. He was the beloved son, born on August 30, 1962 in New Kensington to Lorraine Harris Driver of New Kensington and the late Chester E. Harris, Sr. Chip was a 1980 graduate of Valley High School where he helped win the 1979 Basketball State Championship.  He then attended Robert Morris College where he led the 1982-1983 Basketball team to the NCAA Championships, led the nation in steals in the 1983-1984 season, and was awarded the 1984 NorthEast Conference Player of the Year.  In 1984, Chipper was drafted by the Kansas City Kings.  He also played for the New Jersey Jammers, and played overseas. Chip was inducted into the Robert Morris Sports Hall of Fame and was the first member of the Robert Morris Ring of Honor which was founded in 2014.  In 2014, he was inducted into the Alle-Kiski Sports Hall of Fame. Chip was a member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of New Kensington. He also was active in his community mentoring youth and coaching in various basketball leagues. Chip had a magnetic personality that brought joy to all who knew him. Besides his mother Lorraine Driver, he is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Stephen) Shaulis of Penn Township, and Caylen Harris (boyfriend, Kevin Dooley) of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Kellen and Maia Shaulis; and sister Chrystal Harris-Dooley, and a large number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Chip was preceded in death by his father, Chester E. Harris, Sr., his life partner, Kim Thrower, maternal grandparents, Heflin & Bertha Cox, and paternal grandmother, Mary Harris. Viewing will be on Sunday from 4-8 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington.  A funeral service will be held Monday, June 4, at 11 AM in Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1150 Asa W. Roberts Way (formerly Fourth Avenue), New Kensington.  Anyone attending the service should go directly to the church.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Arnold.  Please leave condolences at www.rossgwalker.com
