Andrew Onifer Obituary

Andrew J. Onifer Sr., 90, of New Kensington passed away peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2019.  He was born May 15, 1928, in Plum Boro to the late Joseph and Susan Devore Onufer.

Andrew was an assistant mine foreman and coal miner for 35 years at the Russelton and Logan’s Ferry mines and was a custodian at Plum High School. He was a member of  St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, where he was very active, the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles – 53, in New Kensington. He enjoyed traveling with his wife. They took many road trips in their car, and among the many places they visited are Niagara Falls, the Grand Ole’ Opry in Tennessee, and Rome. He also served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948 as a Military Policeman (MP) and was involved with the Manhattan Project.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Thelma N. Onifer; daughter, Judith (Fred) Bernard; five grandchildren, Fred Jr., Laurie, Traci, Nicki, and Jay; five great grandchildren, Chloe, Colby, Lillie, Eric, and Sam; and sister, Irene Farina.

He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew J. Onifer Jr in 2004; and siblings, John Onifer, Mary Pazul, Emma Petricca, Genevieve Albert, and Richard Onifer.

Viewing will be Thursday, Jan. 10 from 11 AM to 12 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD, 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where a funeral service will be held at 12PM. Father John Szczesny will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
