Memorial Trees
What is the Memorial Tree Program?
The act of planting memorial trees can be traced back to the 1800s, including U.S. President Andrew Jackson’s planting of a magnolia on the south lawn of the White House to honor his late wife. After WWII, memorial tree planting increased thanks to the prevalence of campaigns to plant trees as "living memorials" to soldiers leaving for the war.
Today, purchasing a memorial tree as a way to pay tribute to a loved one who has died is more popular than ever, as the burgeoning environmental movement has inspired tree plantings across the country. Families appreciate this thoughtful, environmentally friendly way to express sympathy, breathing new life into forests and delivering natural benefits year after year to our planet.
Funeral homes appreciate the ability to present another condolence gift option that can be ordered directly from their website.
Working together, the benefits of this program will give back for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
After an order is placed, we work with our forestry partner to select the best planting location based on areas of greatest need. When possible, the closest available impacted area to the funeral home. Factors such as climate, soil conditions, and ecosystem compatibility determine the type of tree planted.
Selecting the right tree and planting it in the right place at the right time of year are essential to ensuring your tree will thrive, especially once fully grown.
Individual tree location or species selection is not available, but we continue to evaluate future options.
Memorial trees are typically planted during late spring through late summer, but timing varies based on the particular planting project assigned to your order, as well as the planting schedule of our planting partner for that project.
To help ensure each memorial tree is planted promptly, we often reserve planting space with our tree-planting partners ahead of time. Depending on the time of year and the planting location assigned to your order, a memorial tree planting for your order may have been completed during a recent planting season prior to your completed purchase.
An email confirming the planting location assigned to an order will be sent to the purchaser within 10 days of purchase.
The species of tree is selected by our forestry partner based on the region. They ensure that the chosen species align with local ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and long-term environmental health.
Within 10 days of your purchase, you’ll receive an email confirming the designated planting location. This location is selected from the areas of need identified through our ongoing tree planting partnerships. While we do our best to match your loved one’s tree to a location near the funeral home, this isn’t always possible due to project availability and seasonal needs.
Your memorial tree will be planted according to the planting schedule set by our partners for that specific location. Most plantings take place from late spring through late summer to support healthy growth and long-term restoration efforts, though timing may vary by region.
To help ensure each memorial tree is planted promptly, we often reserve planting space with our tree-planting partners ahead of time. This allows us to reduce the time between when a tree is purchased and when it is planted, and it also helps us continue fulfilling memorial plantings during winter months when planting at certain locations is paused due to weather.
In some cases, this means the memorial tree planted in honor of your loved one may already be part of a previously reserved planting allotment—especially if your purchase is made during the winter season.
Our forestry partners collaborate with regional conservation groups, environmental organizations, and local planting teams to ensure trees are planted in the most suitable locations. When possible, these teams prioritize impacted areas closest to the funeral home.
Memorial trees are planted as part of larger reforestation efforts and are not individually marked. Because these trees contribute to restoring impacted forests and natural habitats, they are not intended for individual visits. However, you will receive information about the general area where your tree was planted, and updates on reforestation projects will be available in our annual tree planting report.
We do not place individual plaques or signs at tree planting sites. However, you will receive details about the specific planting project.
Memorial tree purchases are not tax deductible, as we are not recognized as a charitable organization. Your purchase still supports important reforestation efforts coordinated by our planting partners.
