Russell W. Mitchell, 76, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
He was born in New Kensington on August 15, 1947, to the late William and Lavina Campbell Mitchell, and lived in New Kensington most of his life.
Russ was a 1965 graduate of Ken-Hi, then graduated from West Liberty College in West Virginia with a bachelors degree. He was a United States Army veteran during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Alaska. He always enjoyed telling stories of his time stationed in Alaska.
Mr. Mitchell was a technician at ALCOA Technical Center in Upper Burrell Township for 26 years, retiring in 2011. Previous to that he was a coal miner at the Renton mine in Plum Boro for 10 years.
He was a member of the New Kensington Eagles #533, the American Legion #868 in Lower Burrell, the Arnold Volunteer Engine Company #2 Club, and was a life member of the Moose #53 in Lower Burrell.
Russ was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed following the Pitt Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his only grandson, Julian Vincent.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Amy Cooper Mitchell; daughters, Angela Mitchell (Joshua) and Renee (Derek) Vincent; grandson Julian Vincent; his brother Raymond (Maureen) Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be on Saturday, February 24, from 5-8 PM in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, where the Loyal Order of the Moose will have a service at 7PM. Viewing will also be Sunday, February 25, from 1PM until services at 2PM with Rev. Dean Ward, pastor of The River, A Community Church. Private burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
